Welcome to Well-Being for Nurses and Students

This site is dedicated to promoting the well-being of students and nurses and exploring key factors that influence academic persistence and workforce retention.

What is well-being?

In its broadest sense, well-being is a state of being healthy, happy, and contented. Many factors influence one’s overall well-being, including:

  • Emotional/Psychological well-being: This refers to one’s ability to cope with daily stressors, manage emotions effectively, build resilience, and maintain a positive outlook on life.
  • Social & Relational well-being: This underscores the importance of meaningful relationships, strong social connections, and a sense of belonging within a community. It also includes feeling understood, valued and safe to express oneself.
  • Physical well-being: This calls for maintaining good physical health through healthy habits like proper nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep.
  • Intellectual well-being: This involves pursuing knowledge and skills and maintaining a sense of curiosity and intellectual growth.
  • Spiritual well-being: This focuses on an individual’s sense of purpose, meaning, and values, whether through religious beliefs, personal philosophy, or connection with nature.
  • Learner and clinician well-being in nursing: This is an integrative concept that characterizes quality of life with respect to an individual’s physical and mental health along with school or work-related environmental, organizational, and psychosocial factors (NASEM, 2019).
  • Academic Well-being: This involves feeling a sense of purpose, belonging, and satisfaction in academic life, while being able to adapt to challenges and pursue meaningful academic success.
